Would You Build an Ark Before the Rain? See What Noah Teaches Us About Trusting God

Follow Noah's obedience in Genesis 6–7 and learn to trust God with MyBibleIQ's Quest 3.

"By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence preparbibled an ark for the salvation of his household." Hebrews 11:7

Discover why Noah's story is about more than a boat and a flood, and what his obedience reveals about faith.

Most of us know the picture. A huge boat. Animals two by two. A rainbow at the end.

But have you ever stopped asking what it took for Noah to start building? God asked him to prepare for something he had never seen. And Noah obeyed.

His story moves in three steps: God's command, Noah's response, and God's protection. MyBibleIQ's Quest 3 walks you through all three.

Why did God send the flood in Noah's day?

Genesis 6 describes a world where "every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually" (Genesis 6:5). God's response was not cold. He "was grieved in His heart" (Genesis 6:6). Yet "Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD" (Genesis 6:8).

The Command: Build Before the Rain

God gave Noah clear instructions: "Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood" (Genesis 6:14). It would be 300 cubits long, about 450 feet, with rooms, three decks, a window, and a door (Genesis 6:15-16).

Notice how specific God is. What does that detail reveal about His purpose?

Noah kneels over a scroll with ark plans drawn on it while the ark's wooden frame rises behind him.
Noah's Response: He Did All That God Commanded

Genesis 6:22 records Noah's answer in one sentence: "Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did." No argument is recorded. No delay.

Hebrews 11:7 says Noah was "warned by God about things not yet seen" and prepared the ark by faith.

What does Noah's obedience teach us about faith?

Faith sometimes means acting on what God says before you can see the outcome. Noah's obedience rested on trust in God's word, not on what he could see. Go deeper in How to Actually Know God (Not Just Know About God).

For your own reflection, ask: Where is God asking me to obey before I understand?

Preservation: Safe Inside God's Protection

When the time came, God said, "Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time" (Genesis 7:1). The animals came in order, as God had commanded. Then "the LORD closed it behind him" (Genesis 7:16).

God Himself closed the door. Noah did not secure his own safety.

Elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, and sheep walk in pairs up a ramp into the ark as Noah's family waits at the glowing doorway under storm clouds.
What does the ark represent in Noah's story?

The ark represents God's provision: the way of escape He prepared for Noah and his family through judgment. Genesis 7:16 shows God actively protecting those inside.

For your own reflection, ask: What would change if I trusted God's protection as Noah did?

Explore Noah's Story in Quest 3

Quest 3 brings Noah's story to life with short story videos, Scripture, flashcards, and quizzes. You can watch the moment, read the passage, and test what you remember.

For example, one quiz asks: Did God command Noah to bring only pairs of every animal? No. Genesis 7:2 says clean animals came by sevens and other animals by twos. Details like this are easy to miss until you read closely.
