What Did Noah Do After the Flood? Waiting, Worship, and God's Rainbow Promise

Discover how Noah's patience, worship, and God's rainbow covenant reveal the power of trusting God's promises.

"I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth." Genesis 9:13

The flood is over, but the story isn't. Discover what Noah's waiting, worship, and God's promise reveal about trusting God.

Most people remember the rain. Fewer remember what came after.

Noah spent about a year in the ark. When the rain stopped, he still had to wait. And when he finally stepped onto dry ground, the first thing he did was worship.

MyBibleIQ's Quest 3 follows Noah from the receding waters to his altar and the rainbow. It's a story about patience, gratitude, and a God who keeps His word.

What happened after the flood in Genesis 8-9?

The waters slowly receded, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat, and Noah's family left the ark when God told them to. Noah built an altar and worshiped, and God made a covenant never again to destroy the earth by flood, giving the rainbow as its sign.

Waiting: Trusting God Between the Storm and the Promise

Genesis 8:1 turns the story: "But God remembered Noah." God sent a wind, and the water began to go down.

Still, it took time. Noah sent out a raven, then a dove. The dove came back with "a freshly picked olive leaf", a sign that life was returning.

Even when the ground was dry, Noah did not leave until God said, "Go out of the ark" (Genesis 8:16).

What does Noah's waiting teach us?

Noah's waiting shows that trust includes patience. He watched for signs, but he moved when God spoke, not before. Go deeper in How to Actually Know God (Not Just Know About God).

For your own reflection, ask: Where am I tempted to rush ahead of God?

Worship: Noah's First Act on Dry Ground

"Then Noah built an altar to the LORD" (Genesis 8:20). Before building a house or planting a field, he offered burnt offerings from the clean animals.

Remember the clean animals that entered the ark by sevens? Now we see part of the reason. (Read last week's Noah post.)

God received the offering as a "soothing aroma" and promised that seedtime and harvest, summer and winter, and day and night would not cease (Genesis 8:22).

‍

Worship first: "Then Noah built an altar to the LORD" (Genesis 8:20).

‍

Why did Noah build an altar after the flood?

Noah built an altar to worship God and thank Him for bringing his family safely through the flood. It was his first recorded act after leaving the ark (Genesis 8:20).

Covenant: The Promise in the Rainbow

God then made a covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature: "neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth" (Genesis 9:11).

The sign was a rainbow: "I set My bow in the cloud" (Genesis 9:13). God said that when He saw it, He would remember His covenant (Genesis 9:15). It's one thread in the story of the whole Bible: a God who keeps His promises.

‍

A sign in the clouds: God remembers His covenant (Genesis 9:13–15).

‍

What does the rainbow mean in the Bible?

In Genesis 9, the rainbow is the sign of God's covenant never again to destroy the earth by flood. It reminds us that God keeps His promises.

For your own reflection, ask: Which of God's promises do I need to remember this week?

Watch, Read, Recall, and Reflect

Watching helps you enter the scene. Reading lets you examine the text. Recall strengthens what you learned, and reflection connects it to your life. MyBibleIQ brings all four together through stories, Scripture, flashcards, and quizzes.

For example: What did the dove bring back to the ark? An olive leaf (Genesis 8:11). A small detail like this marks a turning point in the story, and it's easy to miss until you read closely.

A correct answer gives you a detail to build on. A missed answer gives you a reason to revisit the story. Want a quick check? Test your Bible IQ with 10 questions.
